These are the things that you just cannot bid into a job in
advance. For example, we received an speedometer cable adapter that was supposed
to work with the five-speed set up, but we discovered both ends were
wrong. So carefully, very carefully... the ends were cut off the old speedometer
cable and welded onto the new one. We then hand filed the worn
out parts to fit (see photo). Well, then 'Murphy' (the guy with the law) came along and the speedometer head still didn't
work. We'll look into that again later.
The next thing that 'Murphy'
attacked were the head lights. This should have been simple enough: First, buy a 12
volt light bulb and second, install said light bulb, right? --------- No wrong! The
receptacle literally disintegrated when we looked at it. You could see
that someone else had tried to rewire it a couple of times and the old
wires and insulation were crumbling. Well, with two days before its supposed
to be completed and on a weekend to boot, there was no way to order an original replacement
part So I placed another Call to Kevin at NAPA in Kingston. "Are there
any replacement bulbs and sockets in your store for any kind of light
that will work with a whatchamacallit?" Kevin said, "We have some weird looking
ones we ordered for a guy with an early BMW a couple of years ago and since we had
to buy a case and he only needed 2 bulbs, we have some extra's here."
.......... Two hours later, using a 1 3/4" hole saw, some really really small
sheet metal screws and some soldering, WE HAD LIGHTS!
Last but not least, 'Murphy' put a crook in my neck while installing the Red
Top optima battery down in the rumble seat compartment. All in all though
we had a lot of fun working on and solving dilemmas on this project.
